W. G. Easton - Artist, Illustrator
Above is a work on scraper-board by the illustrator William George Easton. I have always considered it an outstanding work, most people I show it to assume it is a photograph, or that it was produced by some photographic process. No, its just a talented man scraping white lines on a piece of board. The humanity of the subject contrasts with the cold clinical way he has used the lines to build up the picture. Finding virtually nothing of his work on the Internet I just had to put this up as an example of true craftsmanship. Easton was born in London in 1879 and studied art at Bolt Court School of Photoengraving and Lithography and the Kensington School. Listed in the art directories as a painter, illustrator and designer he exhibited 5 times at the Royal Academy. A fuller biography of him can be found at <this link> on the website of Bob Forrest. It also contains links to other examples of Easton's scraperboard work.
